The local yarn store (or LYS) is a home away from home - a sanctuary for knitters & fiber artists.. A LYS is filled with walls of rainbows and inspiration. You’ll find a shop owner that is a resident in your community, and employees that are eager to help you choose the next project and share helpful tips and tricks. According to Forbes Magazine when shopping at a locally owned business 45% of every dollar spent stays in your community; as opposed to 14% spent at any chain retailer. You are paying for the shop owners’ and employees’ mortgage, vet visits, groceries and childcare.
Most local yarn stores offer an array of classes, from brand new beginners to advanced skills. These classes are about so much more than just learning to knit. From my experience with teaching classes at a LYS, these are the 5 most important benefits I’ve discovered:
Learn a new skill - perhaps the most obvious reason to class is to learn to knit for the first time or to tackle that skill you need to make that new pattern that’s going viral.
Hands on instruction - Sure you can find all sorts of videos on how to knit on youtube but those videos can’t answer your questions, or see your progress to give in the moment corrections and tips.
Social atmosphere - Leave the pets, partner, or kids at home and meet people in your community with whom you know you share at least one interest. I promise you will have more than just knitting in common.
Diversity - Students will be all ages, genders and races. Everyone needs the same tools to knit. Discover your similarities instead of your differences.
They’re just fun - I have experienced classes so full of laughter and joy you would think we had gone through a couple bottles of wine. Let go of your day to day problems and enjoy everyone’s company.
